The Festival of Listening invites authors, radio producers, artists, students, programmers, sound designers, musicians, to contribute with their works to the sound festival.
The Festival is an open platform for radio-art. Every one from any continent is warmly welcomed.

DICK RAAIJMAKERS, MONOGRAFIE

Dick Raaijmakers (1930) wordt alom erkend als één van de grondleggers van de elektronische muziek in Nederland. Als componist, theatermaker en beeldend kunstenaar heeft hij een omvangrijk oeuvre op zijn naam.

In de jaren ’50 stond hij al aan de wieg van de ontwikkeling van populaire elektronische muziek in Nederland, waarna hij zich steeds meer heeft toegelegd op (muziek)theater en beeldende kunst. Zijn werken en installaties zijn van een dusdanige originaliteit en artisticiteit, dat ze wereldwijd hun gelijke niet kennen.

Met de Monografie van Dick Raaijmakers verschijnt binnenkort het langverwachtte overzicht van zijn oeuvre. Dit boek geeft inzicht in de werkmethoden, denkwijze en motivatie van Raaijmakers en fungeert als onmisbaar naslagwerk. Het overzicht wordt begeleid door een aantal essays van experts uit de muziek- en theaterwereld als Elmer Schönberger, Frans Evers, Kees Tazelaar, Michael van Hoogenhuyze en Paul Slangen.

STORM is een stichting die zorgt voor de instandhouding van een pijporgel dat via MIDI met computers en elektronische instrumenten kan communiceren in de R.K. kerk O.L.V. ten Hemelopneming in Maurik

Het geheel is een volledig mechanisch orgel, dat voorzien is van elektronische instrumenten die per uitvoering/organist van gedaante/samenstelling kunnen verschillen. Het orgel is in maart 1998 geplaatst door de firma Mense Ruiter Orgelmakers uit Zuidwolde onder supervisie van Ton van Eck, Willem Tanke, Ernst Bonis en Jos Beijer. Composities voor het instrument zijn reeds vervaardigd door René Uijlenhoet, Peter Bares, Willem Tanke, Jan van Maanen en Jos Beijer.

My First Recession starts after the party is over. This study maps the transition of critical Internet culture from the mid to late 1990s Internet craze to the dotcom crash, the subsequent meltdown of global financial markets and 9/11. In his discussion of the dotcom boom-and-bust cycle, Geert Lovink lays out the challenges faced by critical Internet culture today. In a series of case studies, Lovink meticulously describes the ambivalent attitude that artists and activists take as they veer back and forth between euphoria and skepticism. As a part of this process, Lovink examines the internal dynamics of virtual communities through an analysis of the use of moderation and "collaborative filtering" on mailing lists and weblogs. He also confronts the practical and theoretical problems that appear as artists join the growing number of new-media education programs. Delving into the unexplored gold mines of list archives and weblogs, Lovink reveals a world that is largely unknown to both the general public and the Internet visionaries.

Geert Lovink is a Australian-based Dutch media theorist and Internet critic, a co-founder of numerous online projects such as Nettime and Fibreculture, and the author of Dark Fiber and Uncanny Networks.

Modular 2003, London - Concert Review and Videos

The Modular 2003 Conference was held in London, September 10th thru 12th, 2003.

Roland Kuit performed New Proze from The Hague. The performance took place the next day because of technical difficulties with the video projection. New Proze from The Hague is a multi-media work based on a century old novel about The Hague, the city where Roland lives. There is a DVD video that Roland accompanies with live electronic music. The music is played by Roland moving in front of a bright spotlight wearing several photo sensors. The signals from the sensors are used to generate MIDI control information for a single Nord Modular synthesizer. The patch on the synthesizer is aptly called the virtual throat.

The piece is very abstract, probably more so to me because I didn't understand the Dutch narration on the DVD. You certainly don't need to know Dutch to enjoy this performance. Almost immediately I could notice the Roland's movements were directly controlling the music. Sometimes his movements appeared to be a dramatic gesture in response to the sound. I found this captivating. The sounds themselves were sometimes quite grungy and other time very guttural. The effect was quite evocative. Karnatic Lab

Many examples exist in elements of the music of Steve Coleman, Stravinsky, Messiaen, Ferneyhough, and also by many composers, performers, and improvisers here in the Netherlands.

One approach to do this is through the study of Karnatic Music (from South India), where these concepts are fully developed. The theory comes from India and is interpreted for use by western musicians to create new music.

The Karnatic Lab is a concert series where music can be performed which explores any of these elements microtonality, rhythmic complexity, and ornamentation, and the goal is then to have the chance to hear different approaches to these similar concepts.

This opens the concerts up to most types of music - we have programmed contemporary, jazz, improvised, electronic, medieval, and ethnic all side by side.

Each concert will be a variety of ensembles and pieces.

Stichting CONLON schaft YAMAHA-Disklavier aan

Stichting Conlon stelt zich ten doel bestaand repertoire voor en met disklavier op professionele wijze uit te voeren en het ontstaan van nieuw repertoire te bevorderen.

De Yamaha DC3-Pro is een vleugel van 186 cm groot en bevat de meest recente techniek voor professionele opname, playback en interactief samenspel met andere instrumenten en video (zoals op 2 maart 2002 te zien was in het Stedelijk Museum bij de uitvoering van het "Portret van Hedwig").

De Stichting Conlon is opgericht met als doel nieuwe en bestaande akoestische instrumenten en apparatuur met midi-input aan te schaffen, te beheren en te (doen) ontwikkelen. Het bestuur van de Stichting Conlon bestaat uit Wim de Ruiter (voorzitter), Luc Houtkamp, Christina Viola Oorebeek en Henk Heuvelmans (Gaudeamus).

Het Disklavier wordt als instrument al geruime tijd gebruikt in hedendaagse composities, zelfstandig maar vooral ook in samenspel met andere instrumenten en live-elektronica. In veel gevallen moest daar tot nu toe teruggevallen worden op oudere, veelal te kleine en technisch te beperkte instrumenten of zelfs op de in de jaren 80 ontwikkelde Vorsetzers . Dat alles kan nu als verleden tijd beschouwd worden het Yamaha Disklavier DC3-Pro is een vleugel van 186 cm groot en bevat de meest recente techniek voor professionele opname, playback en interactief samenspel met andere instrumenten.

De Stichting Conlon stelt in samenwerking met Gaudeamus het Disklavier beschikbaar aan componisten, musici, podia en conservatoria, enerzijds om bestaand repertoire voor en met Disklavier op professionele wijze uit te kunnen voeren en anderzijds het ontstaan van dit specifieke repertoire te bevorderen.

Componisten kunnen tegen betaling van 125 Euro per jaar een abonnement krijgen om met het instrument te werken. Voor het gebruik door conservatoria en andere instellingen en bij concerten op podia in Nederland en bij andere activiteiten worden speciale tarieven gehanteerd.

Het instrument staat nu in de repetitie-ruimte van Gaudeamus, Swammerdamstraat 38 te Amsterdam. Vooralsnog moeten gebruikers in het bezit zijn van een eigen computer. Er loopt nog een subsidie-aanvraag voor randapparatuur zoals een laptop-computer met de nodige compositie- en sequencer-software als Max-MSP, Finale, Logic.

I am writing because I am creating an Internet database of information on today's classical composers (this will now have its own webpage at composers21.com, but it was formerly a part of the online encyclopedia nupedia.com). My job is to contact as many composers as possible and to gather information on themselves and their music to post to the website. Here is the information that I am specifica lly looking for: birth date and location; education (or private study); primary means of communication (e-mail address, street address, school address, telephone/fax); a complete list of works, both published and unpublished; short excerpts from reviews of both performances of works and the works themselves (lacking any information from newspapers or journals, you can write your own - optional); recordings of your music (label, ensemble, conductor, etc. - if applicable); and your primary publisher(s).

I feel that this project is worthwhile, and all 95 of the composers that I've heard from so far agree with me. I look forward to hearing from any of you sometime soon

Much work on Ambisonics is in progress here at York University. We are currently developing second order systems for soundfield synthesiss and control interfaces for composers, amongst other things. It is also now common to see spatialisation used as a fundamental tool in musical compositions.

Using a SoundHack-style interface, sound files may be processed in a number of ways:

1. The main feature of the program is a technique for separating an audio signal into something which is called a source or excitation signal and a resonance characteristic or filter. The excitation signal and resonance characteristic are saved to separate files; the excitation signal is saved as a normal audio file (AIFF) and the resonance characteristic is saved as a file format which can only be used by the program itself. Within the program it is possible to recombine an excitation signal with any resonance characteristic of your choice in order to create 'hybrid' sounds which combine distinct properties of two different sounds into one. These 'hybrid' like sounds can have a very strong quality of their own. Furthermore, the program features a series of techniques for processing the resonance characteristic itself, for example a technique which creates a crossfade between two resonance charcateristics.

2. An improved technique for convolution which results in a better sound quality in comparison to normal straightforward convolution techniques.

3. A technique for stretching sounds in an unfamiliar way which is described by Trevor Wishart in his book Audible Design (Orpheus the Pantomime 1994).

4. Several techniques for altering the harmonics of a sound which are also described by Wishart, like stretching the spectrum in an unfamiliar way or thinning the number of harmonics in the spectrum.

All processing techniques are explained in detail in the user manual (PDF) which is included with the program.
