Ton Bruynèl was born on January 26, 1934 in Utrecht. He died on May 5, 1998 in Mailly, France.

Education

From 1952 to 1956 he studied piano at Utrecht Conservatory of Music with Wolfgang Wijdeveld. He banded together with fellow students Peter Schat and Jan van Vlijmen, rallying around the composer Kees van Baaren. His attention was focused on the French musique concrète and he became orientated with electronic music at the universities of Delft and Utrecht.

Activities

In 1957 he was the first composer in The Netherlands who had a private studio for electronic music. From 1970 Bruynèl taught electronic-composition at the Utrecht Conservatory.

Compositions

Bruynèl composed an impressive number of electronic works, in which both visual art and poetry were frequently involved: e.g. Collage Resonance II, in cooperation with the poet Gerrit Kouwenaar. He also has combined electronics with instruments and voices. The Amsterdam Municipal Museum has more than once exhibited his work: Signs (for wind quintet and sound tracks) in 1969 and the Kubus sound project (together with the architect Aldo van Eijck and the sculptor Carel Visser) in 1970. Phases, for orchestra and sound tracks was performed in Paris during the 1975 ISCM Festival. The National Ballet produced the ballet "Landscape" with four of his compositions. Many works are regularly performed, during festivals and on other occasions, in Poland, Italy, Germany, France, USA, Canada and Australia. His composition Non sono un uccello, a video opera on the history of flight was broadcasted on television in 1998.

Prizes

Mobile for sound tracks was selected as the best Dutch composition during the 1966 International Gaudeamus Music Week. Adieu petit Prince and Chicharras were awarded at the Electro-Acoustics Festival of Bourges, France.
