Ton Bruynèl (1934-1998) - Looking Ears Complete

Composers' Voice Near (CV near 12)

back

The oeuvre of Dutch composer Ton Bruynèl (1934-1998) is multifaceted and richly diverse. Nearly all of his compositions are written for a combination of acoustic instruments and electro-acoustic soundtracks. There are also several works for recorded soundtracks without instruments. Since 1957 he established his own electronic music studio, the first private studio in the Netherlands. He was not only interested in electronically developing new sound colours, but also especially fascinated by mixing and merging electronic sounds and ‘live’ acoustic instruments of compatible tone quality. This is Bruynèl’s topos, the trademark from which he stands apart from most other composers of electronic music. Ton Bruynèl was influenced by important post-war currents in music history, such as integral serialism, aleatory, neotonality and microtonality, but he worked with these compositional techniques in his own, often intuitive, way. Environmental sounds of nature and of machines inspired him. Ton Bruynèl often collaborated with artists from other disciplines, like the dance group of Elio Pomare (Resonance I, 1962), the visual artist Gérard van den Eerenbeemt (score Signs, 1969) and the poets Gerrit Kouwenaar (Collage Resonance II, 1963) and Bert Schierbeek (Chicharras 1985, Le jardin 1993, Le temps tricheur 1994, the video opera Non sono un uccello 1988-1998).

Ton Bruynèl initiated his own CD series 'Looking Ears' in 1992. The series is now completed by the Ton Bruynèl Foundation with this 6CD box, released by MuziekGroep Nederland under the label NEAR. The box includes three new CDs with recordings that were previously unavailable to the public, ranging from a historic recording of Study for piano and radiophonic piano sounds (1959) to a recording of Cours des nuages for orchestra and soudtracks, which was completed in 1999 by Ad Wammes. The Looking Ears 1, 2, 3 CDs, originally released in the 1990’s, are also included in this box. An article by Thea Derks in the sleeves presents new biographical information and points of view. A CD-ROM track contains three essays by Kees Arntzen and René Uijlenhoet, program notes by Ton Bruynèl on his compositions, lyrics, thirty photographs of Ton Bruynèl and of his studio equipment, and four scores.
